Marie and Bill Temple have grown grapes and made wine for over forty years. They planted their Monterey County Vineyard in 1977. Varietals include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Chardonnay. Marie and Bill have been sharing their wines with friends, who encouraged their venture into marketing their favorite varietals.Marie is the daughter of pioneering grape growers in the Yakima Valley in Washington. After 100 years of growing grapes, she and her siblings recently sold their family's vineyard in Prosser, Washington.
When Bill retired in 2005, after a fifty-one year career as a general insurance broker, he and Marie decided to travel. Having been to the major wine-producing countries (during harvest season), they thought it would be fun to follow their dream to begin a wine business. Hence, Chateau Marie Antoinette was launched.
All grapes come from the Central Coast appellations of Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. Marie and Bill have a partner with vineyards in the Arroyo Seco and Paso Robles areas growing 49 acres of premium grapes. Marie and Bill supplement their own grapes with selected fine wine from several specialty wineries in Carmel Valley, Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties in California.

WINEMAKING STYLE
"Zen Zin" reflects Sunset Cellars' minimalist winemaking style and respect for our grower's efforts in the vineyards. Our winemaking objective is to express and refine the flavors and characteristics created in the vineyard. All grapes are hand-sorted before crushing. Wines are fermented in half-ton containers and punched down by hand. Racking, done when necessary, is as gentle as possible, and aging features the restrained use of new oak, to enhance the grapes' flavors and not overpower them.
Our goal is to develop supple wines with ample fruit that celebrate the distinguishing characteristics produced in different regions and vineyards.
We are commited to offering wines of quality and value. To this end, we have focused our efforts on discovering and maintaining grape sources which can support this premise.
Sunset Cellars emphasizes red wine varieties including Barbera, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Zinfandel, but we also make a Pinot Gris.

FACILITIES
We purchase all our grapes from carefully selected, well-managed vineyards in various appellations. The wine is produced and bottled at our Suisun Valley facility, and in Lake County, where we rent space as an independent winery at Mt. Konocti Growers in Kelseyville.

Douglas and Katsuko Sparks. Warren Smith is Associate Winemaker and White Wine Czar; when pressed, he sometimes tells us what he plans for the white(s).
